Over the course of history, texts have often landed their authors in prison or were composed during and after the authors‘ time behind bars: Rosa Luxemburg wrote essays and letters; Nâzım Hikmet translated Tolstoy’s War and Peace and wrote poems. The experience of the extra pressure put on thinkers in an authoritarian system connects the artist and journalist Zehra Doğan, the writer Aslı Erdoğan and journalist Can Dündar. They share the fate of living in exile, charged with being »enemies of the state« for their work in Turkey. What does it mean for a society, and for the work of its artists, writers and journalists, when thoughts become grounds for conviction? The panellists discuss this and more with the sociologist Nil Mutluer, who lives in exile herself, is one of the first signatories of »Academics for Peace – Germany« and scientifically researches migration and the diaspora.

Die Erfahrung als Denker*innen in einem totalitären System besonders unter Druck zu stehen, verbindet die Bildende Künstlerin und Journalistin Zehra Doğan, die Schriftstellerin Aslı Erdoğan und den Journalisten Can Dündar. Sie teilen das Schicksal, wegen ihrer Arbeit in der Türkei als »Staatsfeinde« angeklagt zu sein und nun im Exil zu leben. Was bedeutet es für eine Gesellschaft und was für die Arbeit der Künstler*innen, Schriftsteller*innen und Journalist*innen, wenn man für Gedanken verurteilt werden kann?
