Esra Karakaya in conversation with Mariana Katzarova and Maryna Rakhlei [Event in English]
Mariana Katzarova is a journalist and human rights advocate. Originally from Bulgaria, she was a founder of the first independent newspaper in Bulgaria in 1989, called “Democracy”. Mariana founded RAW in WAR (Reach All Women in WAR) in 2006 in the UK, after working in the war zones of Bosnia, Kosovo and Chechnya. In 2020, she spent an extensive period of time in Belarus, providing advice and support to women human rights defenders and civil society.
Maryna Rakhlei is a senior program officer in the German Marshall Fund’s office in Berlin, where she analyzes regional developments in Eastern Europe and is part of the team assisting civil society in Belarus. Before joining GMF, Rakhlei covered foreign relations for the Belarusian newswire Belapan in Minsk, and she maintains extensive contacts in the region.
Esra Karakaya is an award-winning journalist, video producer and founder of the YouTube talkshow Karakaya Talks whose aim is to open up an online space for people and narratives that are underrepresented and marginalized in German mainstream media. She has been awarded multiple prizes for her work, including the Grimme Online Award (2020) and the “30 under 30“ award by the Hertie Foundation (2019).
